How to resize a colourwork chart

A colourwork chart has no size. It is a grid of stitches, and it only acquires inches when you knit it at a gauge. That single fact gives you two different ways to “resize” a chart — and one trap.

First, the trap: stitches are not square

A stockinette stitch is wider than it is tall: 1/spi wide by 1/rpi tall. At this example’s fine gauge (7 sts, 9.5 rows per inch) a stitch is about 1.36× as wide as it is tall. Draw a motif on square graph paper and it will knit up squashed. Chart on knitter’s proportional paper — or preview at true aspect ratio, as the chart below is drawn.

Way 1: change the gauge, keep the chart

Physical size = stitches ÷ spi wide, rows ÷ rpi tall. This 15 × 13 diamond measures:

• at 28 sts / 38 rows per 4 in (fingering): 2.25 in × 1.25 in
• at 18 sts / 24 rows per 4 in (worsted): 3.25 in × 2.25 in

Same chart, about 56% wider — without touching a single cell. This works because the stitch aspect ratio barely moves between stockinette gauges (0.74 vs 0.75 here), so the motif keeps its shape.

Way 2: rescale the grid itself

To make the motif bigger at the same gauge, multiply both dimensions by the same factor and redraw: 1.5× turns 15 × 13 into roughly 22 × 20. Rounding each row of a curve by hand is fiddly — diagonals develop stair-steps — so expect to tidy edges afterwards. Scaling width and height by different factors changes the motif’s shape; do it only on purpose.

Then re-check the fit

A resized chart must still fit its garment: at most the front’s stitch count minus the seam stitches wide, and short enough to sit between hem and neckline. On this tee that budget is 82 sts wide at worsted gauge — our engine refuses to place a chart that busts it, rather than silently clipping your motif.
